Safera's Story

Safera Gullamasan

Safera Gullamasan is about 40 years old.

Safera’s lined face shows the pain of a life filled with tragedy. Her husband died when a Russian bomb dropped from a plane left her alone to bring up three sons. When her children were small she had a home bakery where she used a fire pit that weathered her face with the heat from making bread.

One of her sons was killed during the Afghan war with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and her sorrow multiplied. Later one of her remaining sons left for Iran and the last time she heard from him was ten years ago.

For Safera, the Widows Garden gives her the chance to make more money than she did in the hot kitchen baking as well as the company of other women who ease her sadness by giving her friendship and encouragement.
